A Escola Estadual Maria Iracema é a mais antiga da região do ABC, grande parte da população de São Bernardo já estudou lá. Você é um deles?

O atual prédio, na Praça Lauro Gomes, foi inaugurado em 1954. Quando houve a demolição do antigo casarão de taipa que serviu como escola, foi encontrada uma placa contendo a inscrição ‘1773′, provavelmente a marcar o ano da construção do prédio colonial.

Em 1921 a escola recebeu o nome de Escolas Reunidas de São Bernardo. Um livro daquele ano registra o nome do diretor, Francisco de Almeida Garret, e das professoras, entre as quais Christina Fittipaldi, tia de Emerson Fittipaldi. Em 1925 a escola passou a se chamar Grupo Escolar de São Bernardo.

A denominação Maria Iracema Munhoz data de 1952, uma homenagem à professora santista que lecionou na escola entre 1917 e 1920.  Maria Iracema Foi professora na escola Caetano de Campos por quase três décadas. Ficou conhecida pelos moradores de São Bernardo do Campo por ser uma pessoa  justa, bondosa, enérgica e amante das artes como pintura e musica. Faleceu em São Paulo dia 7 de janeiro de 1946. (A causa de sua morte nao foi registrada).  Seu nome foi escolhido para nomear a escola por conta de sua amiga Milena Calderazzo que também era professora e conseguiu assim homenageá-la por ser uma mulher que dedicou a sua vida ao magistério publico. Na escola, lecionou apenas um ano.
